BASIC SKILLS IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM

Grades 3, 4, 5, 6

MATHEMATICS PROGRAM

To avoid pulling students out of instructional time, students in the Basic Skills math program will receive their complete math instruction with the Basic Skills teacher or with the classroom teacher with an instructional aide.  This instruction will be at the same time the classroom teacher will teach math.  The Basic Skills math program will follow the same curriculum of the student's assigned grade level but, having a smaller class size, the teacher will have the opportunity to address individual needs and provide remediation and assistance.

LANGUAGE ARTS LITERACY

The reading/language program can be primary or supplemental (in addition to the developmental reading provided by the assigned reading teacher).  Again, to avoid conflict of schedules, the Basic Skills supplemental reading will be provided during reading "seatwork" (independent) time.  Identified students will receive reading/

writing integrated instruction with the remediation teacher or aide.  Emphasis will be on developing writing experiences based on reading material.  This approach is intended to strengthen reading comprehension and at the same time provide background for, and experiences in, writing improvement.
